Dr. Erica Bisson Named Executive Medical Officer of UUMG

Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to share that, effective October 3rd, 2022, Dr. Erica Bisson will serve as the Executive Medical Officer (EMO) for the University of Utah Medical Group (UUMG). In this role, she will be responsible for the execution of UUMG’s strategic and operational goals in collaboration with UUMG practice site partners.
Dr. Bisson serves as Professor of Neurosurgery and Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah. She also serves within the Department of Neurosurgery as the Director of the Complex Spine Fellowship and Vice-Chair of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Since joining the faculty of University of Utah in 2009, Dr. Bisson has held various administrative roles including Medical Director of the Neurosurgery Clinic and Ambulatory Chief Value Officer. Dr. Bisson’s clinical career encompasses treating patients with the breadth of spinal disease. She is currently the President of the University’s Medical Board. Dr. Bisson’s career has also impacted the research community. She has led a multi-center research consortium focused on the evaluation of outcomes following spine surgery. She serves in several scientific leadership and advocacy roles locally and nationally. Her efforts have distinguished her as a leader in defining quality spine care.
Dr. Bisson is proud to take on this new role and looks forward to the opportunity to work more closely with the talented faculty who are a part of UUMG. She looks forward to the opportunity to having a greater impact on the operations of our system.
In partnership with Dayle Benson, DHA, and Executive Director of UUMG, Dr. Bisson’s position assists in overseeing UUMG operations, including medical group analytics, payer relations and contracting, clinical and financial operations, communications, and strategy. This position is a key leader in sponsoring clinical innovation, promoting quality, value, safety, and patient experience, and building a culture focused on improving health care processes and outcomes.
I am confident in Dr. Bisson’s ability to help lead UUMG to new heights. Over her tenure in the system, she has demonstrated that she is an exceptional leader and problem solver. The expertise she gained as an administrator, as well as the perspective she developed from her clinical and research experience, makes her an ideal fit for this role. I look forward to the impact she will have on our medical group.
Dr. Bisson succeeds John Bohnsack, MD, who served in this role since 2011. During his tenure, Dr. Bohnsack positively influenced all aspects of UUMG operations, acting as physician advisor for UUMG leadership, medical group analytics, and UUMG finances and promoting improved clinical operations and provider experience. His commitment to UUMG, professional collegiality, and brilliant mind all contributed to shaping UUMG as a critical component of an increasingly integrated health care delivery system.
